Welcome to The Rutgers Electro-Acoustic Lab (REAL)

The Rutgers Electro-Acoustic Lab (REAL) includes two studios designed for sound generation, design and post-production for audio and video. Its main function is to serve as an environment for students and faculty to explore music technology through the realization of electroacoustic and computer based music. Access to the studios is primarily through course enrollment or by arrangement. A full-fledged recording facility, the studio can address the needs of composers and performers seeking music production. There is also the capability to address creative audio requirements for theater and film production.

The current setup includes a 56 channel Yamaha 02R96VCM 24bit digital recording console, an Apple QuadCore MacPro with 2 Terabytes of storage and outboard processing by DBX, PreSonus and Ensoniq. Several MIDI controllers are available, including two 88 key Korg Triton Workstations. Software includes Logic Studio, Final Cut Studio, Max/MSP and Reason. Studio A is targeted for a complete Nuendo production system and Studio B will contain a Pro Tools system.

Mark Zaki, composer and assistant professor of composition is the director of REAL.

ELECTRIC CAFE - FALL 2011

Martha Mooke: Beyond Virtual Corridors

Martha Mooke, composer/electro-acoustic violist, a pioneer in the field of electric five string viola, transcends musical boundaries by synthesizing her classical music training with extended techniques, digital effects processing and improvisation. She is a Yamaha Artist and leading clinician on electric and alternative approaches to string playing.

Mooke is founder and violist of the electro-acoustic Scorchio Quartet which has performed and recorded with artists such as David Bowie, Philip Glass, Trey Anastasio, Iggy Pop as well as championing new works. Mooke has toured internationally with Barbra Streisand, Andrea Bocelli and “Star Wars in Concert”.

Mooke’s genre-defying recordings, Enharmonic Vision and Bowing's Café Mars (duo with electric guitarist Randolph Hudson) have attracted wide critical acclaim. Her catalog includes works for electric and acoustic instruments, film, theater, dance and multimedia productions.

Madeleine Shapiro: Works for cello and electronics by Morton Subotnick, Anthony Cornicello, and Dorothy Hindman.

Madeleine Shapiro has long been a recognized figure in the field of contemporary music. She was the founding director of the internationally known ensemble The New Music Consort and presently directs ModernWorks, an ensemble that performs and commissions recent chamber works.

Madeleine performs extensively as a solo recitalist throughout the United States, Europe and Latin America, programming both acoustic and electro acoustic works, many of which were written for her. Madeleine's first solo CD, Electricity: Works for Cello and Electronics (Albany Records) was greeted as  "focused and cohesive...a polystylistic collection of pieces that individually push the instrument and technology in unique ways" (Time Out New York).

ModernWorks most recent CD, string quartets by Ge Gan-ru was chosen by The New York Times as one of the best CDs of 2009.
