About the Fine Arts Department

Art and Art History
The four-year program leading to a Bachelor of Arts degree in Art offers Rutgers students at the Camden campus a variety of concentrations which include art history, computer graphics, graphic design, museum studies, painting, printmaking & photography, sculpture, and teacher certification (in cooperation with the Teacher Preparation Program). Students may also design their own interdisciplinary majors to prepare for careers in art therapy, medical illustration, advertising, and other fields.

Music
Course offerings in music are designed to give each student an integrated approach to theory, history, composition, electronic music, and performance--experience in all five areas being essential to the understanding of music as an artistic and intellectual achievement. Theory courses allow the student to work with musical material, to understand modes of organization in composition, and to employ methods of musical analysis. History courses introduce students to methods of studying the development of musical genres and the relationship of music to the other arts and areas of thought. Composition courses introduce students to methods of style, structure, and organization of musical material. Electronic Music courses introduce students to current music technology and making music with machines and software. Students develop performing skills through private study and through participation in the College Choir, Madrigal Ensemble,, Performance Ensemble, and Jazz Ensemble. Ongoing concerts featuring renowned musicians provide an opportunity for students to be exposed to a rich variety of musical styles.

Theater Arts
Our emphasis is placed on student generated work and original work created in and around our playwriting wing. We offer a unique perspective on the study of theater—one that emphasizes the creative process and new play development, a vital aspect of American theater. We encourage our students to think of themselves as creators as well as interpreters, whether their primary interest is Acting, Directing, Playwriting,Technical Theater or a combination thereof. Our students graduate from our Theater Program prepared for graduate study, careers in the theater or other fields that demand creative, dynamic individuals.
