This course introduces students to life in 20th century Latin America and to the fascinating art of film making in Latin America. Students will learn about Latin American society, geography, politics, and history as well as methods employed by film-makers to narrate and evaluate different aspects of existence in countries ranging from Mexico to Argentina . Various films from different regions, countries, genres and directors will be viewed and analyzed.

Stresses the creation, transmission, and content of popular culture, with particular emphasis on the role of the mass media. Assesses methods employed in the analysis of mass culture and in the evaluation of its impact (e.g. debates about television and violence, gender stereotypes in print and film media). Places popular culture and the mass media in the context of the larger structures of inequality and power.

Satisfies either the literature component of the Literature and Fine Arts requirement or the Diversity/Global Studies requirement for the '03 catalog. Satisfies the foreign language course requirement of pre-'03 catalogs. Course taught in English Study of German film since World War II. Includes a variety of cinematic responses to the war and the Nazi past, as well as films fo the "New German Cinema" and others. Films of Rainer Maria Fassbinder, Volker Schlondorff, Werner Herzog, and others.
