Multicultural America: A Celebration on Film
(Sponsored by the Campus Multicultural Committee) Thursdays March 13 to April 24, 3:30-6:00pm, Lecture Hall 110, Fine Arts Building
March 13: The Celluloid Closet Professor Larry Gross of the Annenberg School of the University of Pennsylvania discusses this documentary concerning gay representations in mainstream cinema from the beginnings of film to the present. This fascinating documentary features clips from Hollywood"s top films with commentary by Whoopi Goldberg, Tony Curtis, and Shirley MacLaine.
March 27: Get on the Bus Spike Lee's cinematic representation of the Million Man March will be discussed by Rutgers Newark Professor Jesse Rhines, the author of the new book Black Film/ White Money published by Rutgers University Press.
April 3: The Brothers McMullen Professor Randall Miller of St. Joseph's University will examine Ed Burns' hilarious study of an Irish American family from Long Island. A recent hit from the Sundance Festival.
April 10: Dim Sum: A Little Bit of Heart Professor Peter Feng of the University of Delaware will discuss this enchanting film of Chinese American life in San Francisco. Critic Leonard Maltin found it "distinctively Chinese... with a refreshing knowing universality."
April 17: This Is My Life Carrie Rickey, film critic for the Philadelphia Inquire will discuss women's roles in recent Hollywood films. This Is My Life is one of the few films in recent years to be written and directed by women. It stars Julie Kavner(better known as Marge Simpson) as a mother of two girls who decides to become a standup comic.
April 24: I Am a Sorcerer Filmmakers Ron Stanford and Ivan Drufovka present their Documentary of typical everyday life in a subdivision near Atlantic City, where your next door neighbor happens to be a --sorcerer. An unusual and provocative visit to the world of santeria.
