Grading Calculations  -  Review Guide for Final

December 22, 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. -  Make-up Exam in Fine Arts 110 for anyone who missed the third exam or who is receiving less than a C in the course.
December 15 11:30 to 12:30.  Review Session in FA110.  Mandatory attendance for anyone who plans to retake the final on December 22 because of receiving less than a C in the course based on the December 10 exam.  Also open to those taking the exam for the first time on December 22.
December 10 - Extra Credit Assignments Due - No ExtensionsTHIRD TEST 7:30 a.m. to 8:55 a.m.  Third test (optional, if you choose not to take it now, you can take it on December 22, 2 p.m.).  You don't have to come at 7:30, but you should consider it if you usually take a long time on tests.  We have to end on time at 8:55.
December 8 -  Review.  The Review Quiz Assignment has been posted in WEBCT.  You may take it as many times as you wish up to December 22.  Survey Crosstabs Assignment Due Dec 8 or Dec 10Because of the ending of the semester, late Survey Crosstabs assignments will be accepted only up until 8 a.m.  December 10. 
December 5 -  Reading:  Content Analysis, Chapter 11.
December 3 -  Discussion of Cross-Tabulation Assignment
December 1 -  Excel Graphics and Regression Assignment Due.  Reading:  Field Research, Chapter 9.
November 26 -  Optional laboratory session in BSB 117 for those needing help with the Excel assignment.  Attendance will not be taken.  If there are too many for BSB 117, we will overflow into BSB 108. 
November 24 -  Use of Excel to graph trends.  Assignment:  Type Answers to Open Ended Questionnaire Items Into a File bring to class printed on paper on Nov 21 or Nov 24.  You don't need to download the questionnaire to do this, just open a new file and type in the question numbers and the answers.  Put all of your respondents into a single file. Please bring in the original survey forms as well.
November 21 - Reading:  Chapter 8:  Comparative Research Using Aggregate Units. 
November 19 - Second Examination - bring a pencil and a calculator.  Covering chapters 3, 4, 5 and 7 in the textbook plus percentages, means and standard deviations.
November 17 -  Review for Second Examination.
November 14 - Causal Hypotheses assignment due 8 a.m. on paper or in WEBCT.  Review Session on Percentages, Means and Standard Deviations.  Mandatory attendance for all students who scored less than 75% on the statistics portion of the first exam (check WEBCT for your score).  All are welcome to attend.

October 31 -  Interviewing Methods.  Reading:  Interviewing Guidelines. -  Interviewing Techniques.   Questionnaires and interviewing assignments will be distributed.
October 29 -  Introduction to Causal Analysis, Chapter 5 in the Textbook.  The Art and Science of Cause and Effect.
October 27 -  Exercise 7 from the Workbook Due. More on sampling, computing margins of error.
October 24 -   Censuses and Samples:  Chapter 4 in the textbook.
October 22 -   Introduction to Exercise 7, pp 155-168 in the Workbook.  We will do part of Exercise 7 in class.
October 20 - Survey Research:  Chapter 7 in the textbook.
October 17:  Descriptive statistics for continuous variables.  Required Reading:  Descriptive Statistics.  Bring a calculator to class, we will work some descriptive statistics questions in class.
October 15 :  Exercise 3 from the Workbook due in class or on WEBCT.  Intro to descriptive statistics.
October 13:  Evaluating indicators, pages 67 to 79 in the Workbook
October 10 - Assignment:  complete WEBCT course on Ethics of Research with Human Subjects and order a copy of your approval letter so you can submit it by October 20.
Discussion of Measurement, Chapter 3 in the Textbook.
October 8 - Ethics of Research with Human Subjects.  We will go through the online course in class.  Do not worry about getting a perfect score on the quiz, as long as you pass and submit your letter, you will get 100 on the assignment.
October 6 - Feedback on the Exam, papers returned.   Ethics of Research with Human Subjects.  In our text, this is covered in the separate chapters on each kind of research design, e.g., on page 157 for survey research, 184 for comparative research, 206 for field research and 229 for experimental research.  Survey research raises only limited ethical questions, but Rutgers regulations require that all researchers, including students, be given training and certification for research with human subjects.  This is done through an online WEBCT course.  You are assigned to complete this course by Wednesday, October 10, and to submit a copyof your official certification letter to WEBCT no later than October 20.  . Instructions for obtaining this letter are  online.   The course is on WEBCT:  Open your WEBCT, go to "Add a Course, "go to "special courses" and add the course called Human Subjects Certification Program.  Complete the online quiz, pass it, and then obtain your letter. You must obtain a score of 80 or higher to pass the test (don't worry about getting more than 80, I will give you a "100" on the assignment as long as you pass it.  Once you have achieved a passing score, go to the following Internet address:http://orsp.rutgers.edu/webct/and follow the instructions on the screen to get your letter. The letter will open on the screen in your computer.  Save the letter as a file and submit it to WEBCT.  You may also photocopy it and bring it to class.  If you bring it to class, however, I will not be able to enter it into WEBCT until after October 27 (because I can't edit grades until the availability period is over).  If you want to see it in WEBCT before then, you have to submit it yourself.
October 3 - First Quiz Today - bring a pencil with an eraser and a calculator.  Grades should be available in WEBCT by the end of the day.

September 26 -  Use of Percentages and Related Statistics in Policy Reports.  Examples:       Contacts between Police and the Public: Findings from the 1999 National Survey
September 24 - Expected Frequencies.  This is on the same in-class exercise we began on Monday.  Example:  Cops Accused of Racial Profiling.
September 22 - Assignment 2b due 8 a.m.  Percentages and Expected Frequencies.  In-class exercise. [do not use this one for the percent quiz assignment, use the one on the October 1 listing] Bring a calculator to class.
September 19 - ABC TV program on "Junk Science." Some responses. Pauling, salt, chemical sensitivity, breast implants, crack babies.
September 17 - Intro Microcase Quiz Closes at 8 a.m. The Research Process Using Survey Data.  Reading, pages 47 to 53 in the workbook.  Bring your Workbook to class.  Discussion of Assignment 2b in the Workbook, due 8 a.m. September 22.
September 15 - Assignment 2a due 8 a.m.  Chapter Six from the Textbook:  Basic Research Designs.
September 12 -   Discussion of Chapter Two in the textbook on designing research projects.
September 10 -  Signing Up Assignment due in Webct by 8 a.m. The Research Process Using Aggregate Data.  We will go through pages 29-38 in the Workbook, please bring your copy to class.  Discussion of Assignment 2a, due in class on September 15 or in WEBCT by 8:00 a.m. on September 15.  Instructions for Completing Workbook Assignments.
September 8 - The nature and uses of science and social science.   Discussion of Concepts and Theories, Chapter One in the textbook (Contemporary Social Research Methods).
September 5 - Introduction to the Microcase Software   Discussion of the IntroMicrocase Quiz Assignment.  Quiz closes 8 a.m. September 17  You can take it three times and the highest grade counts, so take it as early as possible.
September 3 -  Review of the syllabus.  Introduction to WEBCT. Discussion of the Signing Up Assignment, due September 10.
