STS: Internet and Society
Lesson Plan for Sept 24, 1999
Ted Goertzel
Today we will turn
to philosophy for insight into the logical underpinnings of thought, particularly
the role of numerical archetypes. For a structured outline of today's
lecture, click
here.
Assigned reading: the
first part of Chapter Three of Webmind. You may, of course, do
this reading before or after the lecture, or both. It will be covered
on the midterm on October 15.
During the Support Group meetings we will
discuss Archetypal
Patterns in the Mass Media.
Homework to be done by October
1. Add an entry to your Web Diary discussing one (or both) of
the following questions. This is not to be handed in on paper, but
should be posted on your WEB site by October 1.
-
Can the numerical archetypes
of Naught, First, Second, Third and/or Fourth (or higher?) apply to your
major field of study? What examples can you find of the tendency
for phenomena to go through stages or quanta rather than being continuous?
Can you find any links to WEB pages which discuss this?
-
What archetypal patterns can you find in the
creation myths, Greek mythology, Tarot Cards, mathematical puzzles, television
shows, movies, etc. etc.? What archetypes can you identify with?
You should include some Links to WEB pages that
discuss or exemplify the archetypal patterns you write about. For
some suggested links to follow, click
here.
