Assignments, Exams and Grading Policy

The course is cross-listed in both the undergraduate and the graduate programs. As might be expected, graduate students will have additional required work during the course. All students will have to complete a set of three written homework assignments. In addition, there will be three unannounced 15-minute quizzes, two one-hour long, mid-term exams and a final exam that will take place as per the announced schedule for final exams.

There is no fixed scale for converting numeric grades to letter grades. However, you should be aware that a score less than 50% will automatically entail a D or an F grade. Likewise, a score above 85% will automatically merit an A/A+ grade. For scores in between, the letter grade will be based on the statistical distribution of scores. If you miss any exams or submit an assignment late, you lose the corresponding points unless you can provide a timely, genuine, documented explanation (such as a medical or family emergency). Once I am satisfied with the documentation, I will arrange - at my discretion - for a suitable make-up mechanism.

Finally, please take the time to read the university's Code of Student Conduct carefully. If you are caught cheating on assigned work or exams in this course, you will be immediately penalized one letter grade (from an A to a B etc.). A second offense will result in a failing grade on the course and you will be reported to the department chair and Dean's office.
