Odd Problems:

Where programs are started in the "registry"

Floppy disk errors – Bob and myself have DOS based PCs running NORTON to fix errors.

1406 registry lock error

WEB Page Notes:

Web pages – when converting a WORD doc to HTM the system will create the new file name with the .HTM extension and at the same time it will create a folder (subdirectory) with the same file name but with a  _files  on the tail end of the file name.  All of the files in this folder must also be given  ‘R’ead  and  e‘X’ecute  permissions to be visible on a WEB page.  Force it with  chmod  from a unix command line.

WEB Drive Notes:

Using WEB drive from home – be sure to save often since the connection can be less stable and if it crashes you may have a lock on the file.  Also I have noticed that “popup stopper” seems to make the system unreliable (more crashes).

Why is my PC so slow?

1. Check for unwanted programs being run on your PC - Where programs are started in the "registry"

2. Use the “Task List”  (ALT/CTRL and DEL keys at the same time) – check Application and      Processes.

3. Some “freeware” programs are available like AD-AWARE or Spybot that can look at your system to find data capturing software - these can be dangerous to your system but they can be useful for cleaning up garbage in your PC.  These programs can remove links to WEB pages and may cause your system to act differently than it did before.  In testing these, AD-AWARE found and removed many registry links and cookies but it didn’t seem to effect my WEB page links, while Spybot disabled the search engine connection in Internet Explore and I had to reinstall IE.

Ad-aware   =     http://www.lavasoftusa.com     to the download button on left panel of page then Full install from NetworkingFiles site and let it install and then run the program.

Spybot    =       http://security.kolla.de/index.php?lang=en&page=download

4. Similar to 2 - check processes for older programs -> 16 bit programs. Check the "Options" menu selection to display 16 bit applications. You can use the Keytop program if running Win 95/98. Wintop should be available from Microsoft.
