File Formats for Dr. Goertzel's Courses

When  assignments are submitted electronically, it is important that they be in an acceptable file format.  Each computer program is designed to create, save and use programs stored in a specific format.  Some programs can use multiple formats.  Problems are created when students submit a file in a format I can't read with my software.

A generally useful format is html, or HyperText Markup Language.   This is the language of the World Wide WEB - you are reading this page in html with a WEB Browser.  It has html codes embedded in it which tell the Browser how to display it.  If you would like to see the codes, click on "View/Page Source" on the Netscape Navigator menu.  Files created in html will have the file extension, *.htm or *.html.

You do not have to learn these codes to use html, however, because there are computer programs that insert them for you.  The one we use most at Rutgers is Netscape Composer     You will have very few problems if you use this program to create html files.  It comes free with the
