THE GRADUATE PROGRAM IN PSYCHOLOGYat Rutgers-Camden is a 30-credit course of study leading to the Master of Arts degree and designed both for individuals seeking advanced degree work in psychological science and for those dealing with human resource, program evaluation, or human factors issues in their work place.  In keeping with the goals of the field's two major professional organizations--American Psychological Association and American Psychological Society--the program emphasizes scientific research methods that can be used to assist in the solution of real-world problems.

Students may elect to pursue a course of study with either an applied focus or a basic research focus:

  • The applied research track is designed to serve students who either have jobs or seek employment in such applied settings as education, the health professions, business, the legal system, and social services.  The applied track combines a rigorous program of academic study with a practicum experience, in which each student will develop an empirical or a literature-based project, typically focusing on solving a specific problem under close faculty guidance.  Students have the opportunity to demonstrate to potential employers that they have the skills to conduct research and solve problems in these settings.  The program will encourage students to establish relationships and make contacts that will be valuable in the search for post-graduate employment.
  • The basic research track is designed to serve those students who wish to prepare for admission to a doctoral program or who seek employment in research settings.  For these students the program will combine a rigorous program of course work with an individually supervised research apprenticeship.  Students will be encouraged to develop and carry out projects with the potential for publication, thus ensuring the high quality of the program.
