Advanced Grammar: The final.

Some of you may eventually teach German, others may need to write German for business or other career purposes. But whatever you are using German for, you will reach the point where you are no longer in classes and need to be able to correct and edit your own work.

So the final will consist of a set of sentences that may have errors. Your job is to find the errors, offer a correction, and explain the correction. Those of you who some day take the Praxis exam to qualify as teachers will see something like this as part of the Praxis.

For example:

Sentence: Wir haben in den Stadt gefahren.

You would mark haben and den as wrong, and then write something like this:

haben should be sind. This is auxiliary choice in the perfect tenses, and here you have a verb that expresses a change of location, so you need sein.

den should be die. It is accusative after in, expressing a destination, and Stadt is feminine.

You wouldn’t have to use those exact words. But note what is wrong, explain why its wrong and what it should be.

A practice test follows. Answers are here, but obviously it won’t do you much good to look at them without seriously working through the practice test first.

9.       Wir haben damals ein großer Mercedes gehabt.

10.     Meine Mutter fahrt gern schnell.

11.     Der reiche Rechtsanwalt hat seine Tochter ein neues Hummer zu Weihnachten geschenkt.

12.     Zum Geburtstag habe ich viele neuen Bücher bekommen.

13.     Wir haben viel Spaß gehabt damals in München auf dem Oktoberfest mit unseren Freunden.

14.     Ich glaube aber nicht, dass wir wirklich so viel trinken sollen hätten.

15.     Das Weiße Haus teilte mit grossem Bedauern am Montag mit, dass UN-Botschafter John Bowlton sei zurückgetreten.

16.     Bowlton war einer guter Freund vom Präsident.

17.     Die Stadt wurde von einer Bombardierung weitgehend zerstört.

18.     Trotz dem schlechten Wetter wir sind in die Stadt gefahren.

19.     Wir sind aber auf den sehr gefährliche Straßen sehr vorsichtig gestern gefahren.

20.     Die schnellste Züge sind die Französische.

21.     Französische Rotwein ist auch gut.

22.     Der Hund und die Katze schläft auf der Bett.

23.     Wir haben im Sommer nach Kanada gereist.

24.     Wir sind im Winter eine Reise nach Florida gemacht.

25.     Ich bin studieren an Rutgers-Camden.
