THE WORLD ACCORDING TO TELEVISION
Guidelines for Your Book Review
You will choose one of the books marked on
the bibliography I give you. You can write your report only on one of
these books. After I have approved your selection, you can begin to
work on your review. (Note: only one book to a student. Once someone
chooses a book, no one else can write a review on that book.)
Read the book carefully, taking notes as you
read. You should read the book a second time so you really digest it.
Now you're ready to write your report.
Your report must contain the following as a
minimum:
1. Full identification of the book: author,
full title, publisher, place and date of publication.
2. Describe the subject and scope of the book.
3. Give information about the author, focusing
on his or her qualifications for writing this book. You'll have to do
a little research here.
4. Give the author's point of view, and summarize
the main argument or idea (thesis) of the book, giving the main pieces
of evidence to support the author's position.
5. Give your evaluation whether the author
satisfactorily supports this argument or thesis.
6. Connect the book to the larger world by
explaining the ramifications of the argument or thesis, by assessing
the value of the book, or by placing it in the context of public issues
or of other current books on the subject.
7. Relate the book's argument or thesis to
this course, and state whether you would recommend other students in
the class read it, making sure to give your reasons of your recommendation.
Your report will be at least 3 but no more than 5 typed,
double-spaced pages.
