from "Song of Myself," Whitman, p. 679
In your reading consider the various poetic elements we have studied,
but in particular consider aspects of diction and voice. Who is the
speaker in each poem? Who is the audience? What role does each create
for the reader? What aspects of word choice, among other poetic
elements such as line, meter, stanza, rhyme, alliteration, assonance,
imagery, etc., contributes to your experience of reading each poem.
