English 220 - Introduction to Literary
Study
Homework for Wednesday, October 11:
To read:
In Norton Anthology, read "Filling Station," Bishop, p. 962; you do not
need to read "Diving into the Wreck," Rich.
Response:
In Monday's class you read and discussed several first draft efforts in
close reading. For today's class, you are to provide a written response
to that draft, a response that addresses both form and content and
offers the writer some guidance about to proceed in a revision of that
draft. You are to provide me with a copy of that response, as an email
or a typed hardcopy.
Your response should address in substantive detail these four questions:
a. Identify at least three things that this paper does well.
b. Identify at least three things that this paper might do better.
c. Pose at least three questions that you believe will help the writer
compose a stronger explication.
d. Summarize your experience of reading the paper and emphasize one
particular thing you take away from your reading in terms of a better
understanding of the poem.
Of course, you should feel free to comment on a range of issues, from
argument to structure to diction to grammar to mechanics, but do
prioritize your observations.

A more detailed review sheet to
measure your paper against will be
available after 5 pm, 10/09, so feel free to start the revision process.
