The Music Program is sponsoring a seven-day tour of Prague, Czech Republic.  The course is designed for students to explore and experience that country’s vast musical heritage.  Students will visit historical sites, museums, and attend several concerts.

The group will attend concerts at the Prague Spring Festival, the city’s largest music festival consisting of a three-week long series of classical music and dance performances.  It begins on the anniversary of Bedrich Smetana’s death with a performance of Smetana’s symphonic poem Má Vlast (My Country).  There will be numerous museums and historical sights to visit during our tour of Prague including Prague Castle.  Museums include the Bedrich Smetana Museum, the most patriotic composer of the Czech Republic; the Dvorak Museum, the country’s most celebrated composer.  Prague has more theaters and concerts halls than any other major city in the world.

Students who wish to take the course must register in Special Topics – Musical Prague 700:498 for either 2 or 3 credits, or in one of the cross-listed courses.  The course will consist of several pre-trip seminars (times of which to be announced).  Requirements for the course will include a research paper, concert reports, and a journal. No previous background in music is required.
