Calculator Required: TI-83 or TI83 Plus.

Class Meeting: Thursdays 6:00-8:40PM. Room CTC 210B

Course Description:

This course will present to the student the basic principles of elementary statistics using the TI-83 graphing calculation. Topics such as frequency distributions, sigma notation, measures of central tendency, measures of variability, measures of position, the binomial distribution, sampling theory and the central limit theorem, confidence intervals, and hypothesis testing for one sample will be covered.

Prerequisites: Math Skills III/ Elementary Algebra

Homework:    Homework will be assigned and reviewed, but it will not be collected. You are expected to be able to do all the homework problems assigned. If you are not willing to do the work, you will not learn the material. The exam materials will be drawn from the assigned homework problems.

Attendance:   Attedance worths 10% of your grade. Students are expected to attend all classes. If a class is missed, it is YOUR responsibility to get the notes, homework assignment, and to read the text BEFORE seeing me for help. I will not re-teach a lecture, but I will be available for specific questions. Note: The NA grade will NOT be given once I have a test grade for you in my roll book.

Tests:             There will be three tests (each worths 20%) and a comprehensive final (worths 30%)
NO MAKEUP TESTS ALLOWED!
However, the score of the final exam may also be used to replace one missed test (when the absence is properly justified & the instructor is notified in advance). You will be given a one-week notice for examinations. All examinations will be based on the problems discussed in class, in the textbook, and homework. The final exam is cumulative.  The grade of NA (Not Attending) will only be assigned if the student stops attending before any grades have been recorded; this is not an option for avoiding a failing grade.

Grades:       A (90-100), B (80-89), C (70-79), D (60-69), F (Below 60), I (Incomplete. Only under extreme emergencies, and must be completed
within one semester),   NA (Not attending), XA (Never attended), W (Withdraw)

Conduct:       A student found cheating (e.g. receiving, or giving help) during a test will automatically receive a F in the course. Such conduct will also be reported to the Dean of Students for further disciplinary action. Students are expected to arrive to class on time. Personal conversations, cell phones, and other noises in class can be very disruptive - please abstain from such activities. I look forward to working with each of you, and wish all of you a productive, interesting, and successful mathematical experience.
