STS: Computers and Society
Assignment One.
To comlete this assignment, you must open this file in the "Netscape Composer" or another html editor. To do this in Netscape, click on "file" and then on "edit page." In Internet Explorer, click on "edit" and "page" and the file will open in the Microsoft Frontpage html editor. If neither of these works, just save the file and open it in your word processor; in this case make sure to save it in html format - *.htm - rather than in *.doc or *.wpd format. Any late model word processor will have this capability. It is important that you learn to prepare files in html - ten points will be deducted from any assignment submitted in any format.
Once you have opened the file in an editor, you should be able to type your name here:
No matter how you opened it, you should save the file on your own hard disk or floppy disk, giving it the name stsone. Your editor will add the file extension .htm, making the full name stsone.htm. [If your editor makes it stsone.html that is o.k. too.] You should keep the assignment open in your browser in one window, while you do the other tasks in the editor another window. As you complete the tasks, type the answers into the file. When you are done, follow the instructions in item 6 below to turn it in.
1. If you have an Internet email account where you usually receive mail, type in the address here. If you do not have one, open one on clam and type in the address here:
2. Sign up for the class's WEBCT site. To do this, go to https://webct.rutgers.edu/. You must be using a java enabled, secure Browser. Click on "course listing" and then on "090 Arts and Sciences" and then on "090:294 Science, Technology and Society: Computers and Society." Click on the triangular symbol with a key in it. You will be asked to set up a "My WEBCT" page, unless you already have one that you started for another course. I have set the course for open enrollment, so you will not have a password to enter, just follow the instructions for signing up without a password. Set up your own account name and password, following the instructions (we will go over this in class, also). Use your real name, so we can give you credit for your assignments. Be sure to write down your account name and password, we do not have access to your passwords. Remember that these are case sensitive (i.e., small letters and capital letters are different).
3. Sign up for The New York Times on the WEB, and paste in here the headline and first paragraph from a news story on the Technology Page of today's Times.
4. All students who were enrolled as
of May 28 were automatically added to the class mlist at their clam address
as supplied by the registrar. If you were among them, you should
have received a welcome email. If you did not, or if you wish to
unsubscribe or subscribe from a different address, please follow the
instructions
at the end of this assignment. Check off one of the following:
I received a Welcome email wish to remain enrolled on the mlist at my clam
address.
I will join the mlist within 24 hours from clam or from another email address.
5. Write a paragraph about "My Thoughts About the Global Brain." Type your paragraph right here:
6. Now save this file with the name stsone on your hard drive, your H drive on clam, or a floppy disk. Then upload it and deposit it in the "Assignment Dropbox" on WEB CT. Click Here for Instructions on Submitting Assignments.
Mlist Instructions:
This class has a computerized
mailing list. This list is used for occasional messages from the
Instructors and from students (if it is not abused). To be sure of
receiving these messages, you must sign up for the mailing list by sending
an email message to:
majordomo@camden.rutgers.edu
In the text of the
message (not in the subject line, which can be left blank) say the following
subscribe
mlist-sts-internet
end
You
may send your email message from any Internet account: you should
probably use the account where you most frequently check your mail.
However, we have found that some web-based email services, such as Hotmail,
reject mlist mail. If you do not have an account for receiving email,
first
open an account on clam, then learn how to use Netscape
Mail.
To unsubscribe
from the mlist from any address, send a message to: majordomo@camden.rutgers.edu
In the
text of the message, write:
unsubscribe
mlist-sts-internet
end
Majordomo
will send a response to your email account. If you have successfully
joined the list, it will tell you so. If it tells you there is a
problem, figure out what it is and apply again. Usually the problems
occur because you leave a space between the parts of mlist-sts-internet
or because you put "end" on the same line as the "subscribe mlist-soc-socialresearch"
command.
