You're probably sensing that Jill should not be liable to Karen. But can one really say that Jill was not a cause-in-fact of Karen's injuries? But for Jill hitting Mike's car there wouldn't have been an explosion at that time and Karen would not have been hurt.

So Jill is causally responsible for the injuries but so are a lot of people. That's not enough to make her liable.
