This is Dan Rather causation. John is a cause-in-fact of Mary's psychosis because the problem says that Mary became psychotic as a result of being hit. This is a factual issue which must be shown by witnesses and found by the jury.
Whether John is liable for this type of injury is a separate legal issue for the judge to decide.
