RESEARCH INTERESTS
My research is focused in three major themes: time perception and use, studies of consumers with disabilities, and consumer cultural and subcultural issues.
1. Time Perception and Use: The study of time use and its applicability in Marketing comprises a major research focus deriving from my dissertation. This several-year research agenda, developed with Drs. Paul M. Lane and Dr. Jay T. Lindquist, extends to the study of the impact of polychronic time use in consumers’ lives, as well as implications that it provides for product development. My particular interest centers on the development of new methods of study of people’s time perception and use, ranging from ethnographic investigation to the testing and validation of new scales. Recently, Jay and I have decided to focus on the further refinement and application of the Polychronic Attitude Index, both in general and situation-specific contexts. Several phases of data collection have been undertaken. Data collected at Rutgers in Fall 1999 and Summer 2000 are currently being analyzed, with our target journal being the development of a manuscript targeted for the Journal of Consumer Research. Our first draft has been completed and submitted to peer colleagues for comments. We are currently revising the manuscript based on their suggestions.
2. The Americans with Disabilities Act: I have developed several studies examining the realities experienced by shoppers who are challenged with a variety of disabilities. My topics include: a) the discrepancies between disabled shoppers’ lives and the marketplace, b) the development of methods to study such discrepancies, and c) the integration of the disabled consumer into marketing education. My work includes formal empirical studies regarding mobility-disabled shoppers, appearing in the Journal of Retailing, and practical advice for retailers, appearing in the Journal of Consumer Marketing. I also have published public policy recommendations for consumers who are mobility disabled and those who are vision impaired, most recently in the Journal of Consumer Policy. My field methodologies have been reported in a special issue of the Journal of Contemporary Ethnography. Most recently, I joined with Stacey Baker to develop an overview and assessment of the accomplishments of the Americans with Disabilities Act, forthcoming in the Journal of Public Policy & Marketing.
3. Subcultural studies. My work over the years has
led me to examine the consumer behavior of Black and of Hispanic consumers.
More recently, my examinations have turned to the analysis of Asian-American
consumers as a highly-stereotyped group, with a recent manuscript appearing
