Discussion/Study Questions for
Tayeb Salih, The Wedding of Zein
Part One: The Characters

Tayeb Salih is a master at creating colorful, interesting personalities and making them come alive in his writing. One way to approach this book is to think about each one of the main characters listed below. Who are they? Think about the unique characteristics of each person. How do they fit into the story? In what ways are they religious or not religious? How do they follow Islam?

Haneen

How would you describe Haneen?
How do the people of the village view him?
Why do you think they have such respect for him?
Since Haneen is a very religious/spiritual figure, why doesn't the Imam like him?
(Remember that "Imam" is the term for the head of a Mosque.)

Zein

How would you describe Zein?
How did Zein's mother believe that he lost his teeth? (p. 33)
How do the people of the village think of Zein before his special encounter with Haneen?
Does the encounter with Haneen change Zein's status in society (i.e. in the village)?
     How? Why?
How do the people of the village view Zein after the encounter?
Why do you think Haneen was such a special friend to Zein?

Nima

How would you describe Nima?
Does she fit your image of a typical woman in Islam?
How does Nima view education?
Is her view of education different from your own?
Do you think it would be ] different from the view of the Imam?
Nima could probably hve her choice of any man in the village for a husband.
Why does she choose to marry Zein?

Mahjoub

How would you describe Mahjoub?
What part does he play in the community?
Are Mahjoub and his friends religious?

The Imam

How would you describe the Imam?
What picture is Tayyib trying to set in your mind when he describes the Imam?
(What kind of phrases and images does he use?)
What part does the Imam play in the community?

Seif-ad-Din

How would you describe Seif-ad-Din?
How does he come to be converted?
Notice how much Seif changes as a result of his conversion
-This kind of drastic change is quite common when people decide to follow a religion.
How do the people in the village view Seif's conversion? (p. 73-77)
Is Seif a follower of Haneen or the Imam?
How does the Imam use Seif's converstion to attempt to influence people
toward his understanding of Islam? Is this fair?
