Intro to Religion

Course Requirements

Attendance and active class participation. This includes being prepared for class by having completed the reading for each session. Attendance will be taken regularly. If you have a valid reason for an absence please be sure to notify the instructor at the next class session. Also, if you come in late, please be sure to remind the instructor after class so you will not be counted absent. Participation includes taking part in the class email discussions. If you are shy about speaking up in class this is a good opportunity to interact.

Participation in the Class Email Discussion. Students will be expected to subscribe to the email list, read the discussions and post at least one message per week to the list. If you do not yet have an email account the computer labs have easy to follow instructions for how to sign up. A sheet explaining how to subscribe to the class email list will be provided. If you need help with your account, subscribing to the email list, etc. the instructor will be glad to assist you. Just ask

Two Field Reports: Visit and observe a religious service for two different religions. Then fill out a brief report of your observations from each service (forms will be provided for this). Reports cannot be for the same religion, i.e. you will need to visit one service each for two completely different religions and fill out a form for each one. (Example: Buddhism and Christianity are two different religions. Roman Catholic and Baptist are both Christianity and thus the same religion). Reports should be turned in as you finish each visit. But none later than Thursday, Dec. 2.

A project of 5-7 pages utilizing the concepts covered in the course. A project guide with more detailed information will be handed out the first week of class. Project will be due on Tuesday, December 7.

An exam on Thursday, Oct. 14 on material covered up to this date.

An exam on Thursday, Nov. 11 on material covered since the first mid-term.

7. A final exam Thursday, Dec. 16, 2-5 PM on the material covered since the second mid-term (i.e. not comprehensive)

Grades will be determined as follows:

Class Participation/Email Discussion 15%
Field Reports 10%
Project/Paper 15%
Mid-Term #1 20%
Mid-Term #2 20%
Final 20%
Total 100%

Optional Extra Credit:
During the semester there will be opportunities for field trips in which students will observe different religious communities. These trips are completely optional and your grade will not be effected by absence. However those students who do attend will receive two points extra credit on the next exam for each trip. Further information will be provided in class. Note that these opportunities can also be used as a basis for the required field reports mentioned above.
