Religion in Contemporary America

Course Requirements

1) Attendance and active class participation. This includes being prepared for class by having completed the reading for each session. Attendance will be taken regularly. If you have a valid reason for an absence please be sure to notify the instructor at the next class session. Also, if you come in late, please be sure to remind the instructor after class so you will not be counted absent.

2) Participation in the Class Email Discussion. Students will be expected to subcribe to the email list, read thediscussions and post at least one message per week to the list. If you do not yet have an email account the computer labs have easy to follow instructions for how to sign up. A sheet explaining how to subscribe to the class email list will be provided the second week of class. If you need help with your account, subscribing to the email list, etc. the instructor will be glad to assist you. Just ask.

3) Reading Questions. From time to time short assignments will be given to encourage students to do the reading for each class. This may involve answering brief discussion questions on the reading handed out by the instructor, turning in questions the student has from the reading or an occasional quiz.

4) A book review of 5-7 pages on a book chosen from a list provided by the instructor. The assignment will involve analyzing the book and relating it to the subjects covered in the course. Students will do a short (5-10 minute) presentation and discussion of their review in class. The date of each presentation will be chosen to go along with the date that topic is being discussed in the course. The review will be due one week before the presentation date and turned in on disk so that it can be placed on the course web site for the rest of the students to read before that class. The book must be chosen and cleared with the instructor by Thursday, Feb. 19. Since the reviews will be presented in class students will not be allowed to choose the same book for review. A guide for writing the review will be handed out the second week of class.

5) A Mid-Term exam on Tuesday, March 10 over material covered up to this date.

6) A Final Exam during finals week (May 6-13) on the material covered since the Mid-term (i.e. not comprehensive)

Grades will be determined as follows:

Class Participation/Email Discussion 15%
Reading Questions/Assignments 10%
Book Review 25%
Mid-Term 25%
Final 25%
Total 100%

Optional Extra Credit:
During the semester there may be opportunities for field trips in which students will observe different religious communities. These trips are completely optional and your grade will not be effected by absence. However those students who do attend will receive two points extra credit on the next exam for each trip. Further information will be provided in class. Note that these opportunities can also be used as a basis for the required field reports mentioned above.
