

Schiavo has been a full-time faculty member since 1991. He is
a music theorist and historian and currently teaches courses in music theory,
counterpoint, and 20th-century music history.
His primary interests include musical form and 20th-century music. Schiavo is
the recipient of the 2003 Provost's Award for Excellence in Teaching, and the 2008 Alumni Association's Outstanding Faculty Award.
Schiavo holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Rutgers-Camden, where he graduated
Magna cum laude, and a Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy from Rutgers
Graduate School, New Brunswick. His dissertation focuses on Pulitzer Prize winning
composer Charles Wuorinen entitled, The Piano Sonatas of Charles Wuorinen:
An Evolution of Style (Abstract.pdf).
Schiavo has served as a member and Chair on a variety of committees on campus including Admissions and Retention, Student Affairs, and Rules of Procedure. In addition, Schiavo has served as a University Senator and a member of the Student Affairs Committee in New Brunswick. Schiavo has served as Vice President (AY 2002-03, 09-10) and Secretary (AY 2006-07, 2003-04, 2011-12) of the Camden Faculty Senate. He also served as Acting Director of the International Studies Program in fall 2003, spring 2007, and fall 2010. In spring 2004, Schiavo became a board member of the Rutgers-Camden Alumni Association. The Alumni Program Committee on which he served in 2004 won the President's Recognition Program Bridge Award.
Schiavo is a member of the American Musicological Society, the
Society for Music Theory, the College Music Society, and the Association
for Technology in Music Instruction.
