CLASS ELECTRONIC DISTRIBUTION LIST (A.KA. LISTSERV)
An electronic distribution list, known as a "listserv" has been established for each of the classes I am teaching this semester. The purpose of the listserv is twofold. First, it will provide students with a means of communicating with all others in the class who use the listserv. This will facilitate an exchange of ideas and permit you to ask questions about the course of each other or of me. Second, it will allow me periodically to post assignments in which, for example, students will be asked to find information on a certain topic on the Internet.
All students registered for a course as of 9/3/01 will be automatically subscribed to the listserv for that course with the e-mail address you have provided to Rutgers. If that is not the e-mail address at which you ordinarily receive e-mail, then follow the instructions below to subscribe to the listserv at a different address. This means that whenever someone posts a message to the listserv, you will receive a copy of that posting in your e-mail account. Once you are subscribed, you should receive a message from Majordomo confirming that your name has been added to the list.
If for some reason you have not been automatically subscribed, you can subscribe yourself by doing the following:
1. Address an e-mail message to:
Majordomo@camden.rutgers.edu
2. Leave the subject line blank.
3. In the body of the message, type
the following two lines. The names of the mailing lists for the
classes are shown
below.
subscribe (*name of
mailing list*)
end
* The names of the lists, which should follow
immediately after the word "subscribe" WITHOUT parentheses, are
as follows:
|
|
|
| CJ 322 - Juvenile Justice | mlist-cj-juvenile@camden |
| CJ 323 - Varieties of Crime | mlist-cj-crime@camden |
For example, if you are in CJ 322, you should send a message to Majordomo that says:
subscribe mlist-cj-juvenile@camden
end
The address from which you send the subscription request is the address to which all mailings will be sent, so be sure it's the one you want (i.e. if you have an account at, say, AOL or Hotmail as well as at Rutgers, but you prefer that your e-mail go to your AOL or Hotmail account, make sure you send the message from that account).
Additional information about using the Majordomo listservs can be found at S50-4312 Majordomo Using Netscape Messenger( created 10/11/99) (Update 10/18/99) .
Once you have become a subscriber, you can send messages to the listserv simply by addressing a message to the appropriate listserv name followed by: @camden.rutgers.edu (i.e. listservname@camden.rutgers.edu).
A couple of points to remember when using the listserv:
1) Be respectful of the opinions of others and do not use abusive language in postings to the listserv. Failure to abide by this guideline may result in your removal from the listserv.
2) Do not post personal messages to one another on the listserv. Send such messages directly to the person with whom you wish to communicate.
3) Do not post personal messages to ME on the
listserv. If I post an assignment and you are, say, sick and unable to
come to class, do not reply to the listserv to tell me that you won't be
able to do the assignment (unless you don't care whether the entire class
knows about your personal ailments). Instead, send an e-mail directly to
my e-mail address.
