Signing up for the WEBCT site and the Class Mailing List

Note:  The WEBCT pages for my courses have not been set up yet.  Please check again later to see if they are available (or reload this page if you have checked it before).  With the new system, I believe I will be able to enroll all students automatically.

To sign up for the class's WEBCT site, go to https://webct.rutgers.edu/.  You must be using a java enabled, secure Browser.  You now log onto WEBCT with your clam user name and password.  This means that you must first open an account on clam, if you do not have one already.  Click on "course listing" and then on "920 Sociology."  You will see "920:301 Methods and Techniques of Social Research," "920:341 Sociology of Communications"  and "920:425 Cyberspace and Society" among the sociology courses.   Choose the course(s) you are taking and click on the triangular symbol with a key in it adjacent to it.  I have set the course for open enrollment, so you will not need a password from me.  Set up your own account name and password, following the instructions (we will go over this in class, also). Be sure to write down your account name and password, I do not have access to your passwords, and it is inconvenient if you forget.  Remember that these are case sensitive (i.e., small letters and capital letters are different).

This class has a computerized mailing list.  This list is used for occasional messages from the Instructor and TA's and from students (if it is not abused).  To be sure of receiving these messages, you must sign up for the mailing list by sending an email message to:
           majordomo@clam.rutgers.edu
In the text of the message (not in the subject line, which can be left blank) say the following
     subscribe mlist-soc-methods
               end
You may send your email message from any Internet account:  you should use the account where you most frequently check your mail.  If you do not have an account for receiving email, first open an account on clam,  then learn how to use Netscape Mail.

Majordomo will send a response to your email account.  If you have successfully joined the list, it will tell you so.  If it tells you there is a problem, figure out what it is and apply again.  Usually the problems occur because you leave a space between the parts of mlist-sts-internet  or because you put "end" on the same line as the "subscribe mlilst-sts-internet" command.
