Life in Internet Communities, discussion groups, chat groups,
etc. How does it differ from face-to-face communities. This could include
groups on Geocities, AOL or other places. Members of this group should
join and participate in some group and make a presentation of what it was
like. Internet dating fits in here, also the question of web sites exclusively
for women.
SPAM or junk mail, how is this different on the Internet, can
or should it be controlled. This would involve both finding sites which
talk about this, and reports possibly reports of your own experience with
it.
Monopolization vs. competition, particularly Microsoft as a monopoly.
The role of government regulation on the Internet. There is a lot on the
NYTimes site on this.
Censorship of Pornography, especially as related to children.
There has been a lot of controversy over this. Censorship of politics would
also go here.
Security, privacy and cryptography. This includes both technical
and law enforcement issues. The topic of "hackers" can be merged in with
this.
Internet Commerce, business on the Internet. This is very much
a potential growth area. This group could both look for sites discussing
this, and look for exemplary Internet businesses.
Access for minorities, third world countries.
Periodicals and publishing online. This involves comparing publications
online with traditional ones. Copyright issues are included here, including
remailing.
Website design - how to make sites more usable. This involves
looking at discussions of this topic and also searching out interesting
examples of well (or poorly?) Designed WEB sites.
WEB sites designed for children. This might appeal to the education
majors, of which we have quite a few. How do they or should they differ
from those for adults? Who monitors and controls this? Separate sites for
girls and boys?
Video, animation and audio on the Internet. What is being done now, how can it be improved? What effect will the WEB have on the entertainment industry.
Hypertext Fiction which should be read and reviewed with a focus on the use of hypertext and other WEB functions.
