Here is a story Heather Harvey wrote about these results:
No one will ever forget September 11, 2001.
the day our country was racked
with fear, grief, and anger. Even still
Americans fight back with words,
actions, and belief. Rutgers University,
Camden's Methods and Techniques of
Social Research class, led by Dr. Ted Goertzel,
conducted a survey of 501
N.J. residents about their attitudes towards
the everlasting effects of the
9/ 11 terrorists attacks on our country.
A little more than two months after
the attacks, it is evident that Americans have
both faith in the government's
war efforts and are determined to live a normal;
Americans will not live in
fear.
When asked whether or not they approved or disapproved
of the ways in which
the president has chosen to proceed with this
war effort a mere 11%
disapproved. An astounding 78.7% approved
and 14.4% did not respond. In
congruence with this, 76.8% approved of the
U.S. military bombing Afghani
targets while only 10.4% disapproved and 12.8%
did not respond.
Despite the fact that it seems Americans have
a need to prove that freedom
and justice will prevail, the true humanity
that America is known for still
exists. Of the respondents questioned,
62.7% of the Respondents said that
they approve of the U.S. providing food and
humanitarian aid to the people of
Afghanistan, while only 24.6% disapproved;
and 12.8% did not answer this
question.
But, Americans are in no way miscalculating
the extreme severity of this
situation. They are faced with this reality
every day when they get slightly
singed mail, due to the new processes used
by the postal service. Security
guards check pocketbooks and backpacks at public
libraries; and this is all
in addition to the metal detectors that are
now found everywhere, precautions
already being taken by law officials, and heightened
security at airports due
to new legislation passed a short time ago
by Congress, and signed last week
by George W. Bush. When asked how long
they expected this war to last 61.4%
thought that it would last 1- 2 years or longer
while a total of only 23.8%
believed it would last several months to one
year. 14.8% did not respond.
Americans, despite all of this, share their
patriotism proudly with their
neighbors by displaying flags everywhere from
their clothes and cars, to
their doors and balconies. Even at neighborhood
gas stations, such as USA
Gas in Lindenwold, NJ you are greeted with
the message," God Bless America."
And along with their support for America and
its war effort citizens are
showing terrorists that they will not change
their life due these September
11th tragedies. Americans seem to need
normalcy, and they appear ready to
both demand it, and have it.
With the holidays fats approaching and public
places being an easy target,
57.3% of people asked, said that they would
do as much shopping as last year;
9.4% stated that they would do even more, and
only 19.5% said they would do
less. 14.4% did not respond. Maybe
Santa Claus will stop by Osama Bin
Laden's to spread America's Christmas Joy.
It is clear from the results of this survey,
that if terrorists' hopes were
to in fact strike fear in the hearts of Americans
everywhere, their efforts
have failed. While concern might put
citizens on a higher state of alert,
and show everyone that America is not invincible,
the 9/ 11 attacks are if
nothing else a history lesson that will not
be repeated, and proof that
freedom and justice will in fact prevail.
--------------
Here is a draft of a more conventional news release:
Most South Jersey residents expect to do as much holiday
shopping this year as they did last year, despite fear that
the region may continue to be vulnerable to chemical
or biological attacks by terrorists. Two thirds of the respondents
expect to do most of their holiday shopping in traditional
bricks-and-mortar stores, with 11% planning to do most
shopping online or with catalogs, and 25% expecting
to do equal amounts of both.
In the survey of conducted by students in a Methods
of Research course at Rutgers-Camden, 55% of the respondents said they
were afraid of continued attacks such as the recent anthrax attacks.
Only 37% said they were very afraid of a terrorist bombing
in the South Jersey area. Despite their fears,
two thirds of the respondents said they were not at all afraid of
going to local stores and malls to do holiday shopping.
Most said they would prefer not to work in a prominent high-rise
building such as the World Trade Center, and almost
half had some concern about the safety of children attending school
in the region.
Like most Americans, South Jersey residents strongly
support the current military actions in Afganistan,
with 87% approving President Bush's actions.
A strong but slightly smaller majority, 72%, support humanitarian
and economic aid to help Afganistan rebuild after
the war. Strong majorities also support stronger legal
measures against domestic terrorists, including making
it easier for the government to obtain search
warrants and place wiretaps on suspected terrorists,
and giving special attention to people who appear
to be of Middle Eastern descent when doing security
checks.
The majority of South Jersey residents in the November
elections, and most say they would not change their
vote today. Of those who would change their
vote, more would change to Bush than to Gore.
Heather Harvey of Cherry Hill, a student in the class, said that "if the terrorists' hopes were to strike fear in the hearts of Americans everywhere, their efforts have failed." Another student, Jessica Lynch, of Collingswood, was one of 11% who do not support President Bush's actions. She said, "this war on terrorism would justify many other countries bombing the United States because we have been terrorizing other countries for many years." Johnathon Randolph of Pennsauken, N.J., said that one of the respondents told him that the WTC was really knocked down by the CIA because the Taliban refused permission to run a pipe line through Afganistan. Finally, Linda Frank, a student from Beverly, said "women will always shop, no matter what's going on."
There were 501 respondents to the survey, giving a
margin of error of plus or minus 4.5%.
