Outline and Assignments for STS: The Internet and Society
Ted Goertzel
Ninth Class: March 26
A printout of your course journal
is due today.
-
For the first half of today's class, I will explain the basic logic of
Ben's Webmind program, which is modeled on the complexity of the human
brain. I have posted a
brief summary on this site, taken from the Intelligenesis web site.
This tells you what Webmind is supposed to do. Understanding HOW
it will do it is more difficult. There are technical documents on
the WEB site, for any of you who want a more technical explanation.
I have also posted some excerpts
from Chapter Six of our Webmind manuscript. I've also added some
explanatory comments, because this material is fairly difficult.
This most imporant thing in these excerpts is the list of "Lessons for
AI" at the end. I've also posted my lecture
notes on the chapter, which may be helpful.
-
We will then discuss next week's reading on Language and Thought, since
we will not have class next week.
Assignments:
Read the excerpts
from Chapter Six from Webmind. and the articles posted on the Times
Tech page.
Write some ideas in your Course Journal about the possible application
of Artificial Intelligence in the future. What contribution might
AI make to your own field of specialization? What is being done now?
