Ideas for Using Communications to
Enhance the Rutgers Curriculum
Unfortunately, the software we used in class
when we did the brainstorming group did not save my notes as it said it
would. I've reconstructed some of the ideas from memory, and reworked
them a bit based on my needs as the "client" (representing the faculty
or the institution). Today we will work on elaborating them and building
on them. We can also add ideas that I may have forgotten, or from
other sources.
What we need now are more specifics.
For example, what experts would we interact with in online courses linked
to other universities or organizations? What foreign countries or
external organizations would we want to relate to? What might the
summer session offer? Or the Winterm? How might this apply
to general requirements, to the Sociology/Anthro/CJ department, etc.

A billionarie plans an
online university with free courses. An
article critical of this trend, calling it a regressive trend, towards
the rather old era of mass-production, standardization and purely commercial
interests. A report on a year long seminar at the University of Illinois

online courses. Universities pile on e-commerce

Provide opportunities for interaction with people
in different countries, or different parts of this country, or people working
in different organizations or involved in different activities. Courses
with interactive links to people off campus. This could involve use
of the distance learning classroom as well as the Internet. What
courses would this apply best to?A new project for

facilitate taking courses on a number of Rutgers
campuses, perhaps with a common set of graduation requirements. This
raises the question of the whole regional organization of Rutgers - should
it be rethought? This raises very difficult turf problems - we seem unable
to even revise the Rutgers-Camden curriculum, let alone university wide.
Perhaps a university-wide "University College" could be revived?

offer courses online without any need to attend
in person at all, or perhaps come in only for exams. Another option
would be classes that meet once a week for discussion sections, with lectures
being offered online.

opportunity to take courses with distinguished
experts at leading Universities. Possibly interaction with distinguished
experts could be combined with a class. Could we have reciprocal
arrangements with other universities, i.e., a Rutgers students could register
for a course at another university as one of his/her courses. This
could be anywhere. Rutgers could facilitate this by offering the
exams here. Joint classes with other universities seems like an interesting
possibility. Of course, the universities that employ these world-famous
experts may not be so eager to share there time with us. What topics
or experts might be particularly interesting.

Textbooks and reading materials online, either
as a convenience or as a money saver. Do students really want this,
or is a book actually more convenient? Books can also be purchased
online, perhaps providing better prices. There are copyright problems
