Outline for a Five Paragraph Essay on Three Eminent Brazilians

These essays should follow the standard format for a five-paragraph essay.  Each paragraph should be five sentences and approximately 100 wordsInstructions.  The first step is to prepare an outline.  Open this file in an editor and type the information.  Save the file isn html, doc or rtf format and submit it to the Assignment Dropbox by the due date.

  1. Introductory Paragraph 
    1. Introduce your thematic point.  There are three main points people look for in a leader.
    2. A first aspect of your thematic point.  People want leaders to be competent to carry out the responsibilities of their office.
    3. A second aspect of your thematic point  People want leaders to be strong and decisive.
    4. A third aspect of your thematic point.  People want leaders to be empathetic.
    5. Why you chose the three individuals as examples of your point.  Fernando Henrique Cardoso, Lula da Silva and Hugo Chavez have different mixes of these traits.
  2. First Eminent Brazilian
    1. Why this individual was selected to illustrate your theme.  Fernando Henrique Cardoso was President of Brazil for eight years and solved the inflation problem
    2. How this individual illustrates your first thematic point.  Cardoso is exceptionally competent because of his academic training and experience as a Senator, and his scholarship on third world development.
    3. How this individual illustrates your second thematic point.  Cardoso comes from a family with a tradition of holding strong leadership positions and has high level of self-confidence.
    4. How this individual illustrates your third thematic point.  Because of his elite background and academic training, Cardoso does not do well in expressing empathy for the problems of the average Brazilian.
    5. Summary of how well this individual illustrates your point  Cardoso's competence and decisiveness have been called upon to solve critical problems, despite his difficulty in expressing empathy.
  3. Second Eminent Brazilian
    1. Why this individual was selected to illustrate your theme.  Lula da Silva, Brazil's current President, has been much more popular.
    2. How this individual illustrates your first thematic point.  Lula is competent as a manager and motivator of people, but has weaknesses in his understanding of economics and social policy.
    3. How this individual illustrates your second thematic point.  As a labor leader who confronted the military government, Lula developed strength as a decision-maker and leader.
    4. How this individual illustrates your third thematic point.  Lula's personal achievement of mobility from extreme poverty in the northeast contributes to his exceptional ability to empathize with the Brazilian people.
    5. Summary of how well this individual illustrates your point  Lula has been successful because empathy leads people to give him the benefit of the doubt when he relies on others to make critical policy judgments.
  4. Third Eminent Brazilian or comparison person of another nationality 
    1. Why this individual was selected to illustrate your theme.  Hugo Chavez, President of Venezuela, provides a useful contrast to the two Brazilian leaders.
    2. How this individual illustrates your first thematic point.  Chavez has little apparent understanding of economics or social policy, but has relied an increase in oil revenue to fund populist ventures.
    3. How this individual illustrates your second thematic point  As a military man, Chavez has a strong, decisive personality and accepts personal responsibility for his actions.
    4. How this individual illustrates your third thematic point  Chavez has exceptional ability to empathize with the masses, due in large part to his social and racial background.
    5. Summary of how well this individual illustrates your point  Chavez shows some of the dangers of populism, he has polarized his country and avoided making reforms that would his country to build lasting economic stability and social progress.
  5. Closing or Summary Paragraph
    1. Synthesize your essay in different words  None of the leaders are strong on all three traits.
    2. Synthesis of Subtopic One:  Cardoso is much more competent as a policy-maker, Lula has followed his initiatives with only superficial changes, Chavez has focused on distributing oil revenues.
    3. Synthesis of Subtopic Two:  Cardoso and Chavez are strong decisioni-makers, Lula wavers more but has the sense to back away from failed initiatives.
    4. Synthesis of Subtopic Three:  Lula and Chavez are both empathetic, but only Lula has had the ability to overcome class divisions and use his credibility to persuade people to accept viable policies.
    5. Final Concluding Statement:  A leader who is strong in all three skills would be best, but one exceptional strength can be enough to accomplish some things.  Lula is perhaps the best mix of all three.
