Transcript of Chat Class September 30,
2005
\TIMOTHY BEAL>>i was just wondering what to concentrate
studying on for midterm
TIMOTHY BEAL>>i havent had any problems really doing the
work online and i follow you pretty good in class but is there any
specific area to concentrate on
TIMOTHY BEAL>>oh and im also doing the quiz thats due today
by 6 pm
TED GOERTZEL>>I went over that in class yesterday, it's in
the class notes. Here is what I said:If you have not done so
already, this is the time to read the textbook. We have covered
chapter One, Two, Three and Four. There are also summaries of
this material in the Workbook on pages 19, 67 and 91. You should
be able to answer the questions listed under "before you begin".
The test will be mostly multiple choice, so probably the most useful
for reviewing is the "Review Glossary" at the end of each chapter in
the text. There will also be a page of statistics questions
similar to those we have had in exercises:

just as good as a positive one?
TIMOTHY BEAL>>yeah

*+**** STEPHEN--AIELLO entered Fal2005_50920301_goertzel_Room1. Friday,
September 30, 2005 11:16am
TED GOERTZEL>>Here is the formula: If you are
given a sample size and need to know the margin of error
use M = 1/sqrt(N). M in this case is the Margin
of Error as a proportion (not a percent). For your final answer,
convert the result to a percent.
*+**** MATTHEW--WAKELEE entered Fal2005_50920301_goertzel_Room1.
Friday, September 30, 2005 11:17am

Friday, September 30, 2005 11:17am

TIMOTHY BEAL>>dont you round that up though
TIMOTHY BEAL>>or no
LASHAWN ANTHONY>>no i dont think so
TED GOERTZEL>>Vincent is right, if you put 1 in a
calculator, hit divide by and enter 24.49 you get .0408
TED GOERTZEL>>We could round that to 4.1%, but I would also
accept 4.08

STEPHEN AIELLO>>are you going to give us the formulas for
the test or do we have to memorize them
TED GOERTZEL>>Now suppose our sample of 600 had 150 black
respondents
TED GOERTZEL>>What would the margin of error be for the
black respondents?

KRISTIN CURTIS>>8.16%
ALEXIS HEWES-EDDINGER>>8.16%
LILIANA FUENTES>>8.16%
TED GOERTZEL>>But in this case the N is 150 because only
the blacks count - 8.2% is correct

TIMOTHY BEAL>>100
TIMOTHY BEAL>>100
TIMOTHY BEAL>>1000
TIMOTHY BEAL>>geez
ALEXIS HEWES-EDDINGER>>100
TED GOERTZEL>>The formula is: If you are given
a margin of error and asked how large a sample you need, use N =
1/ M(squared).
LASHAWN ANTHONY>>i was thinking 900
TED GOERTZEL>>First we convert the 3% to a proportion, it
becomes .03.

KARLA BLEVINS>>i got 1111
TED GOERTZEL>>Then we divide .0009 into 1, getting 1111.11
NICOLE CHRISTISON>>1111
TED GOERTZEL>>We might round this up to 1112 because it is
always better to have one more than you need
LASHAWN ANTHONY>>o ok
