Transcript of Chat Class September 30, 2005

\TIMOTHY  BEAL>>i was just wondering what to concentrate studying on for midterm

TIMOTHY  BEAL>>i havent had any problems really doing the work online and i follow you pretty good in class but is there any specific area to concentrate on

TIMOTHY  BEAL>>oh and im also doing the quiz thats due today by 6 pm

TED  GOERTZEL>>I went over that in class yesterday, it's in the class notes.  Here is what I said:If you have not done so already, this is the time to read the textbook.  We have covered chapter One, Two, Three and Four.  There are also summaries of this material in the Workbook on pages 19, 67 and 91.  You should be able to answer the questions listed under "before you begin".  The test will be mostly multiple choice, so probably the most useful for reviewing is the "Review Glossary" at the end of each chapter in the text.  There will also be a page of statistics questions similar to those we have had in exercises:

TED  GOERTZEL>>If you have a book with you, you might want to look at some of the questions there and ask me about them.

TIMOTHY  BEAL>>okey dokey thanks

PATRICK  HIDALGO>>will do

TED  GOERTZEL>>Welcome Patrick, where are you?

TIMOTHY  BEAL>>yeah

LILIANA  FUENTES>>no

COLLEEN  MCCAUSLAND>>sure

MATTHEW  WAKELEE>>that would be great

TED  GOERTZEL>>OK, it is 11:15 and class is beginning.  Since there are so many, try not to send too many messages

MATTHEW  WAKELEE>>

CASEY  STRONSKI>>yes we do!!

TED  GOERTZEL>>Let me start with the question of the margin of error for a sample of 600

*+**** ROBERT--COYLE entered Fal2005_50920301_goertzel_Room1. Friday, September 30, 2005 11:16am

*-**** MATTHEW--WAKELEE left Fal2005_50920301_goertzel_Room1. Friday, September 30, 2005 11:16am

*+**** STEPHEN--AIELLO entered Fal2005_50920301_goertzel_Room1. Friday, September 30, 2005 11:16am

TED  GOERTZEL>>Here is the formula:   If you are given a sample size and need to know the margin of error use    M = 1/sqrt(N).  M in this case is the Margin of Error as a proportion (not a percent).  For your final answer, convert the result to a percent.

*+**** MATTHEW--WAKELEE entered Fal2005_50920301_goertzel_Room1. Friday, September 30, 2005 11:17am

TED  GOERTZEL>>So the first thing is to take the square root of 600.

*+**** COURTNEY--CAMPBELL entered Fal2005_50920301_goertzel_Room1. Friday, September 30, 2005 11:17am

HEIDI  BAITINGER>>would the answer be 4.08%?

RICHARD  STRONSKI>>lets not jump to conclusions

TED  GOERTZEL>>yes 24.49 is the square root of 600

VINCENT  CONSTANTINE>>I believe 4.08% is correct

LASHAWN  ANTHONY>>d24.49 would be the sqrt

*+**** CHRIS--CRENSHAW entered Fal2005_50920301_goertzel_Room1. Friday, September 30, 2005 11:18am

*+**** SHAREDA--COLEMAN entered Fal2005_50920301_goertzel_Room1. Friday, September 30, 2005 11:18am

HEIDI  BAITINGER>>Thankyou!!!

TIMOTHY  BEAL>>dont you round that up though

TIMOTHY  BEAL>>or no

LASHAWN  ANTHONY>>no i dont think so

TED  GOERTZEL>>Vincent is right, if you put 1 in a calculator, hit divide by and enter 24.49 you get .0408

TED  GOERTZEL>>We could round that to 4.1%, but I would also accept 4.08

*-**** YAIZA--CRUZ left Fal2005_50920301_goertzel_Room1. Friday, September 30, 2005 11:19am

*+**** YAIZA--CRUZ entered Fal2005_50920301_goertzel_Room1. Friday, September 30, 2005 11:19am

TIMOTHY  BEAL>>what would webct accept

STEPHEN  AIELLO>>are you going to give us the formulas for the test or do we have to memorize them

TED  GOERTZEL>>Now suppose our sample of 600 had 150 black respondents

TED  GOERTZEL>>What would the margin of error be for the black respondents?

MATTHEW  WAKELEE>>no idea

COLLEEN  MCCAUSLAND>>i think he said he is giving us a formula sheet before the test

VINCENT  CONSTANTINE>>8.16

RICHARD  STRONSKI>>8.2%

MATTHEW  WAKELEE>>oh okay

HEIDI  BAITINGER>>8.1%

VINCENT  CONSTANTINE>>8.16%

KRISTIN  CURTIS>>8.16%

ALEXIS  HEWES-EDDINGER>>8.16%

LILIANA  FUENTES>>8.16%

TED  GOERTZEL>>But in this case the N is 150 because only the blacks count - 8.2% is correct

RICHARD  STRONSKI>>shizzaaaaam

MATTHEW  WAKELEE>>oh

*-**** PATRICK--HIDALGO left Fal2005_50920301_goertzel_Room1. Friday, September 30, 2005 11:20am

*+**** PATRICK--HIDALGO entered Fal2005_50920301_goertzel_Room1. Friday, September 30, 2005 11:21am

TED  GOERTZEL>>Now we go backwards.  Suppose we want a margin of error of 3%.  How large a sample do we need to get it?

TIMOTHY  BEAL>>100

TIMOTHY  BEAL>>100

TIMOTHY  BEAL>>1000

TIMOTHY  BEAL>>geez

ALEXIS  HEWES-EDDINGER>>100

TED  GOERTZEL>>The formula is:   If you are given a margin of error and asked how large a sample you need, use  N = 1/ M(squared).

LASHAWN  ANTHONY>>i was thinking 900

TED  GOERTZEL>>First we convert the 3% to a proportion, it becomes .03.

RICHARD  STRONSKI>>1110

ROBYN  DUFRAIN>>1111

LILIANA  FUENTES>>1111

HEIDI  BAITINGER>>1111

*+**** ERICA--MC--NEIL entered Fal2005_50920301_goertzel_Room1. Friday, September 30, 2005 11:22am

KARLA  BLEVINS>>i got 1111

TED  GOERTZEL>>Then we divide .0009 into 1, getting 1111.11

NICOLE  CHRISTISON>>1111

TED  GOERTZEL>>We might round this up to 1112 because it is always better to have one more than you need

LASHAWN  ANTHONY>>o ok

MATTHEW  WAKELEE>>do you always want two decimal places than

LASHAWN  ANTHONY>>ok i c

TED  GOERTZEL>>Suppose we want a margin of error of 3% for the men and two for the women?
