Assignment 2 (4 parts)
Necessary Materials: Whitehead article, Profile of Jail Inmates, 2002 pages 16-22 of Felony Defendants in Large Urban Counties, and internet search.

 

Part I: Based on the Whitehead reading, describe the three types of jail designs and the three types of supervision designs. Which design do you believe should be the model design for the country?

 

Part II: Based  on the Profile of Jail Inmates reading. You have two options. You can identify the types of inmate that is the most over represented in jails today based on personal, criminal history, and other characteristics. Or you can identify the groups that are the least represented among jail inmates.

 

Part III: Using google, other course websites, or textbooks, provide definitions of 5 of the following terms:

Deposit bond (bail)

Unsecured bond (bail)

Full cash bond (bail)

Pretrial release

Pretrial detention

Bail

Surety bond (bail)

ROR (release on recognizance)

Conditional pretrial release

 

Part IV: Based on Felony Defendants in Large Urban Counties reading, Table 18. You have two options. You can describe the profile (characteristics) of a defendant who is most likely to be given pretrial release. Or you can describe the profile of a defendant who is most likely to be detained?

 

Part V - Optional: Using the Felony Defendants in Large Urban Counties reading pages 16-22 .What can you conclude about the effectiveness of bail based on the information you read? And what recommendations can you give to make improvements?

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Assignment 3

Necessary Materials:  Chapters 1, 2, and 3 of Santos: About Prison.

 

Part I: Write a one paragraph reaction to each of the three chapters. This reaction is meant for you to remark not on the writing, but the content of what is written and the issues raised. What did you find interesting, alarming, or disturbing?

 

Part II: Michael Santos holds a discussion board on his website where he answers questions from students. As part of this assignment you will write one question to ask Mr. Santos. I will then prepare one document to send to him to address on his discussion board. Think about the issues raised in the previous reading and lecture on Jails and the film shown about jails. Although most of his term has been spent in Federal prisons many of the same issues apply. Your question, then, can be related to jail issues. Or you may wish to prepare a question about prison issues. Review the course schedule and take a look at some of the readings on prison and prison issues and think of something to ask about any of those issues.

Assignment 5

Necessary Materials: Prisoners in 2004, Santos: ch 4, and Lifetime Likelihood of Going to Prison

 

 

Part I: Write a one paragraph reaction to the chapter in Santos. And write a paragraph on important prison issues illustrated in the chapter. Total two paragraphs.

 

Part II: Using the Prisoners in 2004 statistics select any five tables (must be tables 3 – 14 not tables 1and 2) and discuss two findings from each table that you see as significant or important.

 

Part III: Using the Lifetime Likelihood of Going to Prison first determine “your chances” of being incarcerated based on your age, gender, and race/ethnicity. Then, discuss your impression of one finding from the report.

 

Assignment 6 (Revised)

Necessary Materials: Clear: Law of Corrections

 

Part I: Describe the First, Fourth, Eighth and Fourteenth Amendment Rights that prisoners have.

 

Part II: Gather more information on any three of the cases referred to in the reading using a scholarly source or a google search to a legitimate source. Provide facts about the prisoner, the case, or any other interesting information.

 

Part III: Write one paragraph on what two rights you believe are most important for a prisoner to have. Think of yourself incarcerated.

 

Part IV:  Complete either A or B below –

 

A. Write one paragraph on a “right” that you believe should either be limited or taken away and why.

 

B. Write one paragraph on a “right” that should be broadened or that prisoners should be given that they don’t currently have and why.
