Jan 30 – New Extra Credit Film

Based upon the strong turnout for the first extra film for my ethics class, I have added a new extra credit film opportunity for students. It is Cool Hand Luke and listed on the extra credit page. The purpose of extra credit films are threefold – to give you something productive to do during the free period, to encourage you to think beyond the images presented in the films for the critical issues running through the stories, and to provide you with an opportunity to earn some extra credit points. The briefs you will write are guided by the issues in the films and I have outlined some possible questions for you to address for each film in the brief. The brief is just that, a short analysis, not more than one page single spaced.

         - Clarification about Assignments

Be sure to review the syllabus about the rules on submitting assignments. To receive credit, the assignment must be typed, completed in full, and submitted on time. If it is not typed, if it is missing any parts, or if it is late, a grade of  0 (zero) will be assigned. Assignments that are typed and completed in full will be assigned grades based on the quality of the work. A check minus is worth .5 and indicates a weak assignment. A check is worth 1 point and is a good assignment. A check plus is worth 2  points and is an excellent assignment. A bit of extra effort will earn you a check plus and these points add up toward your final grade in the class.

         - Additions to the Course Schedule

I posted some new material for the upcoming week. No assignments are due, but you are expected to read the material and prepare for a discussion of the material in class this week.

        - First Extra Credit Due Soon

The first extra credit - Extra Credit Brief on Correctional Policy is due Friday Feb 10. Interested students should begin working on this brief.

1/21/06

The corrections crossword puzzle listed on the course schedule for the first week of class should be printed in landscape mode so that it fits on the page. I posted a link on the course schedule for the second week of class about prison reform in Pennsylvania from the Pennsylvania Prison Society. It is a good summary of early jail and prison development in the US generally.

1/18 First Day of Class

Please be sure to review all of the course pages for this class. Pay careful attention to the syllabus. Download and print copies of the readings listed on the course schedule and begin readings. I have included a reading and study guide for the first reading. You should complete this guide as you read the Caputo chapter. You will also see a link for a crossword puzzle, which is intended as a study guide. We will have our first lecture on Friday and you should prepare for this lecture by completing the reading, the study guide, and the crossword puzzle.
