LUNCH WITH PROFESSOR RICHTER ON WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 23 AT 12:15 IN THE WEST B AND C CONFERENCE ROOMS IN THE BASEMENT OF THE CAMPUS CENTER. (WHILE YOU MAY ASK PROFESSOR RICHTER ANY QUESTIONS YOU WISH, DO NOT ASK HIM THE QUESTIONS YOU HAVE TO ANSWER IN YOUR ESSAYS!)
Your assignment is due the week of November 5. We will divide into two smaller groups during this week. Group I (Nov 5) and Group II (November 7). Group I will be the group that meets this Tuesday (October 15) to discuss their bibliographies. Your paper is due on the day your group meets.
You will remain in the same groups (see reading list) for the following week as well when we discuss history on the web.
Assignment: Read Facing East From Indian Country
In a well-organized and well-argued essay of five pages, write a critical overview of the book by answering the following questions:
What new ideas about the "conquest" of the west does Professor Richter
present in his book? What methodology does he use. What historical
evidence does he utilize? What are the advantages and disadvantages
of utilizing such evidence? Does Professor Richter successfully prove
or support his new interpretation? Why or why not?
