1.         M scheint, eine Diskussion über die Todesstrafe, besonders für geistesgestörte Verbrecher, eröffnen zu wollen. Wir wissen auch, dass die Todesstrafe zur Zeit des Films heftig debattiert wurde. Gibt der Film eine Antwort auf die Frage, die er stellt – soll ein Mensch wie Beckert hingerichtet werden?

2.         Erlaubt uns der Film, Beckerts Geistesstörung zu analysieren? Könnten wir zum Beispiel sagen, er sei schizophren? Oder wäre es eher angebracht, seine Störung freudianisch zu analyzieren, etwa als übersteigerte Kastrationsangst oder ein anderes psychosexuelles Problem?
