Choose one of the following topics. The first is simpler, in a way. Do not hesitate to choose it, if you think you will do better on it. The second is more challenging. If you choose the second, I will take its greater “degree of difficulty” into account in grading the language aspects, but at the same time I will expect a clear thesis and good use of evidence, just as I would if you were writing in English.

No matter which topic you choose, you will be graded on the “Grading rubric for writing in German,” as far as purely linguistic matters are concerned.

1. Tell the story of Lola rennt. Include the pre-story and all three rounds. You don’t need to include every detail, but you do need to mention enough details to make clear the differences among the rounds. Mention at least some of the “Und dann” sequences and side effects of Lola’s and Manni’s story. Write a clear narrative that would give a reader who has never seen or read Lola rennt a good understanding of what happens in the film. Do not get into criticism or interpretation.

In addition to the “grading rubric for writing in German,” the grade will be based on the following. “A” papers will give a very clear sense of what happens in the film, how the three rounds differ, what happens in the “Und dann” sequences. All details mentioned will be correct, and the narratives of each round will be coherent and complete without being overly repetitive. “B” papers will give reasonably clear accounts of what happens in the film, but may not be as clear, may not make the differences among the rounds entirely clear, or may make some errors of fact. “C” papers will be unclear or incomplete in serious ways, or include numerous or significant errors of fact.

The grades based on the four categories of the “grading rubric” and the grade based on the content standards just mentioned will be averaged together to produce the grade on the essay.

2. For this topic, use the questions asked in the topic to develop a clear, coherent, defensible thesis, and write a paper offering clear evidence in a clearly organized manner in support of that thesis. Do not feel that you have to deal directly with every aspect of the topic description. In addition to the “grading rubric for writing in German,” the grade will be based on the attached “rubric for grading essays.”

Was für eine Welt, oder was für eine Realität wird in Lola rennt dargestellt – z.B. eine realistische Welt, eine Fantasie- oder Märchenwelt, eine Sci-Fi Welt, ein Welt wie in einem Spiel? Warum wollte der Filmmacher wohl diese Welt darstellen?

Zum Beispiel: sollen wir glauben, dass diese Menschen diese 20 Minuten wirklich drei Mal erleben dürfen? Sind die drei Runden als Nacheinander oder Nebeneinander zu verstehen? Wie funktionieren die verschiedenen Techniken – Film, Video, Zeichentrick, in Hinblick auf die Realitätsfrage? Wie funktionieren die verschiedenen Prologe in dieser Hinsicht?
