Spring 2004

CLASS ELECTRONIC MAILING LIST (A.KA. LISTSERV)

An electronic mailing list, known as a "listserv," has been established for each of the classes I am teaching this semester. Messages sent to the list are automatically sent to all of the people who are subscribed to the list. Thus, whenever someone posts a message to the list, you will receive a copy of that posting in your e-mail account. When you address a message to the list, it will automatically be sent to everyone else on the list.

The purpose of the list is twofold. First, it will provide students with a means of communicating with all others in the class who use the list. This will facilitate an exchange of ideas and permit you to ask questions about the course of each other or of me. Second, it will allow me periodically to post messages in which, for example, students might be asked to find information on a certain topic on the Internet or in which I provide discussion questions in preparation for an upcoming class.

All students registered for a course as of the first day of classes will be automatically subscribed to the listserv for that course with the e-mail address you have provided to Rutgers. If that is not the address at which you ordinarily receive e-mail, then you must update your address in the Rutgers system, which will automatically change the address on the list. This happens frequently if you have set up a computer account here but in fact use, say, a Hotmail or AOL address for your e-mail. The university assumes that you receive e-mail at your Rutgers account and thus sends information there. Therefore, you have to give them the correct address. To update your e-mail address (or your physical address, for that matter), simply go to the on-line directory, log in and use the on-line form to make the changes.

If you change your e-mail address at any time during the semester, you should go to the on-line directory and update your entry. That will automatically keep your address on the class list up-to-date.

If you do not have an e-mail address, you can get one automatically from Rutgers. Getting an account set up gives you access not only to e-mail but also to other computing resources at Rutgers and to the Internet. Click here to go to the page that provides information on how to set up an account.

Once you have become a subscriber, you can send messages to the list simply by addressing a message to the appropriate list:

COURSE LIST ADDRESS
Criminal Justice in America CJ_in_America_S04@rams.rutgers.edu
Children and the Justice System Children_and_Justice_S04@rams.rutgers.edu

If you are not a subscriber to a particular list and you try to send a message to it, the system will not send it to the list.

A few points to remember when using the listserv:

1. Be respectful of the opinions of others and do not use abusive language in postings to the list. Failure to abide by this guideline may result in your removal from the list.

2. Do not post personal messages to one another on the list. Send such messages directly to the person with whom you wish to communicate.

3. Do not post personal messages to ME via the list. If I post an assignment and you are, say, sick and unable to come to class, do not reply to the list to tell me that you won't be able to do the assignment (unless you don't care whether the entire class knows about your personal ailments). Instead, send an e-mail directly to my e-mail address.

4. Make sure that what you post to the list complies with the university's acceptable use policy.
