Information for graduate students

Graduate students will have different requirements than the undergraduate students.  First, your exams will be a different format than those for the undergraduates:  yours will be essay exams. Second, instead of the group project, you will be required to make individual presentations in class and write a paper based on that presentation.  These presentations will focus on either primary or secondary prevention programs designed to deter juvenile offending.  This type of prevention schema is derived from the public health sector, which classifies prevention efforts as primary, secondary or tertiary.  A definition and more information can be found at the New York Academy of Sciences web site as well as in the class textbook on page 127.  That is the first page of a section about primary prevention.; a section about secondary prevention begins on page 255.  You may use these sections to get an overview and ideas about what to discuss in your presentations.  For your presentation, you will be required to utilize at least six scholarly articles or evaluations to critically assess the efficacy of these types of programs.  Your presentation to the class and your paper should explain the rationale for and goals of the particular programs or interventions and discuss how effective they are.  In your paper, you should also discuss gaps in our knowledge and recommendations about future programming and/or evaluation.  Use either the APA or ASA style for citations and references.
