Publishing a Hyperlink Essay on Your
Web Site
We already learned how to u
se
Mozilla
composer to
post a personal WEB page. Now we are going to learn how to
post other "pages" on our "web site". First, we should be clear
on some terminalogy.
"Page": On the internet the word "page" actually refers to a file, in html format, which can be
opened in a browser such as Microsoft Explorer, Netscape Navigator or
Mozilla Firefox. It is called a "page" because it looks like a
printed page, but it can actually be of any length. When you
print out a "page" it may generate many pages of printout.
"Web Site": Your web site is a file
folder on your served (clam.rutgers.edu) which contains files
that you choose to make available on the Internet. The name of
the file folder, for most of you, is public_html.
For a few of you who have been here a long time, it is just html. All the graphs you wish
to use on your Web Pages need to be in this folder as well.
"Home Page": This is the first page people usually go to on your
WEB Site, it is the default they get if they do not specify a file name
when they go to http://clam.rutgers.edu/~yourname. It is a
file in html format with the file name index.html. We already
created a first version of these files and you can link to them from
our course's photo directory page.
Your hyperlink essay will be a Web Page (a file in html format) stored
on your WEB Site with a name that reflects its title. You can
call it whatever you want, e.g, DesperateHousewives
or MyEssay.
You create it in Mozilla Composer or another editor, just as you
created your Home Page. If you wrote your paper in Word, just
save it in "web page format". You publish it the same way, making
sure that the file name is something other than "index". It
should include hyperlinks to at least three web sites. It need
not contain any graphics.
Once your hyperlink essay is posted, you
should be able to find it in a browser by typing
http://clam.rutgers.edu/~yourname/essayname.html
Once you have done this, you need to put a hyperlink in your Home Page
to link to the essay. Just copy the essay's address from the
browser as you would for any hyperlink. Then open your Home Page
in composer, add a sentence saying "here is my essay on mytopic" and
insert a link. Then republish the home page as you did before.
When you are done it should work like Fulano de
Tal's home page which has a link to his essay "Growing Up in the
Peanut Gallery."
