Poster Session Extra Credit Opportunities
for Dr. Goertzel's Courses

See the Department Newsletter for general information about the Poster Session. Pictures of previous years' poster sessions are available.

The poster session is intended for students who want to do some creative work and communicate it to others.  It is not usually the best use of time for students who are behind in their work and need some extra points to get a passing grade.  It can be helpful in this way, but only if it does not take time away from studying for examinations.  I give only 2 or 3 percentage points for a poster because I do not want people to feel they should do it just for the points.

To get extra credit for a poster, you must do all of the following things on time.

1.  Submit a proposal to the "Poster Session Proposals" assignment dropbox on your course's WEBCT site by 5 p.m. on Wednesday April 23.  The proposal should be on the form at the end of this page.  No extra credit will be given for last minute poster ideas, if you are not planning ahead enough to get the proposal in by the 23rd, it is too late to do a poster.  I recommend you get the proposal form in sooner, then check for my feedback before going ahead.

2.   Submit your title to the department by April 25, using the online form.  This is necessary so you can be listed in the program.  Do not expect me to submit your title, you should do this yourself.

3.   Purchase a poster (at Staples or another office supply store), mount your materials on it, and bring it to class on April 30.

4.   Bring your poster to the poster session itself.

The nature of the project will be different for each class.  For Methods, you can do a causal analysis using Microcase data (this will be covered in class in the next few weeks) or you can do one of the Projects at the end of the Microcase workbook.  For Social Movements, you should include a printout of your op-ed essay (suitable revised and corrected) and of two other op-ed essays expressing different points of view on the same issue (you can find these on the New York Times site or other newspaper sites or elsewhere).  You should also include photographs of related social movements activities or other illustrative materials.  These can be printed out from the internet, using a color printer.  For Communications, the project should be on the same topic as your Power Point presentation to class, and you can include printouts of Power Point slides, together with other illustrative materials.

Note:  Please submit this in html or dos text format, not in *.doc or *.wpd.  If you prepare it in Word, just click on "save as WEB page" to save it before submitting it.  This makes it quicker for me to read them in WEBCT.  The file should be in *.htm or *.html or *.txt format.
