Fernando Henrique Cardoso:  "If Lula Didn't See Anything, How Could He Have Become Preesident"

RIO -  The former Brazilian president Fernando Henrique Cardoso said this Friday, in an interview with CBN Radio, that he finds it difficult to believe that president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva did not know what was going on all around him, with regard to the practices that have brought about the current political crisis in the country.  He said that even those who had no illusions about the Workers Party are now experiencing a period of disillusionment.

"We all feel a bit disillusioned, it is not possible to have done so many things wrong without anybody noticing.  Could it be that president Lula never saw anything?  If he didn't see anything, how could he have become president," Fernando Henrique claimed.

The ex-president criticized what he called the paralysis of the country as a consequence of the corruption scandals in the government and said that 2005 is a lost year for Brazil.  According to FHC, it is not viable to pass important projects with the Congress and the government consumed by the political crisis.

"We will lose this year, there is no doubt.  It seems that Brazil is treading water while the rest of the world is not," he warned.

In Fernando Henrique's opinion, "the Workers Party's credibility has been seriously compromised," and the Brazilian political system is going through "a quite serious decomposition."

"These facts are demoralizing the entire political system.  It gives the impression that many people are involved in irregular practices," he commented, referring to the series of scandals.

Fernando Henrique does not believe that political reform will happen this year.  He argued that the law requires that any change, to be implemented before the 2006 elections, has to be passed by September 30 at the lates.

"There is very little chance that any reform will be implemented," he concluded.

RIO - O ex-presidente da República Fernando Henrique Cardoso disse nesta quinta-feira, em entrevista na Rádio CBN, que acha difícil que o presidente Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva não soubesse do que estava acontecendo ao seu redor, em relação às práticas que levaram o país à atual crise política. Ele disse que mesmo os que nunca se iludiram com o PT vivem agora um período de desilusão.

- Nos sentimos todos um tanto desiludidos, não é possível terem feito tanta coisa equivocada e ninguém ter percebido. Será que o presidente Lula nunca viu nada? Se ele não viu nada, como é que ele pode ter chegado a ser presidente? - atacou Fernando Henrique.

O ex-presidente criticou o que chamou de paralisia do país em função dos escândalos de corrupção no governo e disse que o ano de 2005 está perdido para o Brasil. Segundo FH, é inviável votar projetos importantes com o Congresso e o governo tomados pela crise política.

- Nós perdemos este ano, não há dúvida. A sensação é de que o Brasil está patinando, enquanto o mundo não está patinando - alertou.

Na opinião de Fernando Henrique, "o PT foi muito atingido em sua credibilidade" e o sistema político brasileiro vive uma "decomposição bastante séria".

- São fatos desmoralizantes de todo sistema político. Dá a impressão de que é muita gente em práticas irregulares - comentou, em relação aos escândalos em série.

Fernando Henrique não acredita que a reforma política aconteça ainda este ano. Ele argumenta que a lei determina que qualquer mudança, para valer já a partir das eleições de 2006, tem que ser feita até no máximo 30 de setembro.

- É muito pouco provável que haja qualquer reforma - analisou.
