The test will have two parts:
objective and essay.
The objective questions will be similar to those on the practice test,
emphasizing factual knowledge: names, places, a few Portuguese
terms. The Brazilians takes a biographical approach, and the test will
focus on personalities, especially the ones that have several pages in
the book. It will also have questions on the specific
personalities that students reported on, and which you can read about
in the
hyperlink
essays. You should look at the power points which are
available in WEBCT. The names from the Trivial Pursuit are at the
end of this file, but these are only a rough guide. Using the
index to the book could be better because it gives an idea of how much
space was given to a personality.
The essay question or questions will ask you to go beyond the factual
knowledge and develop a theme. The book includes several themes:
- Brazilian history and its similarities and differences to US
history
- The ethnic composition of the country: Portugues, Indian,
African, Immigrants
- Violence and crime, especially in the favelas and in the drug
trade.
- Differences and similarities in the class structure
- Political utopianism and pessimism
- Economic development and inflation
- The mass media, television networks, soap operas
- Religions, African and European
- Environmental problems
- Music, art, dance - this is not given its due in the book but we
have done more with it in class
For an essay questions, I will be asking you to develop
organized
arguments that use some material from the book or from one of the
movies or from one of the class presentations to illustrate a thematic
point. Question 10 in the practice test is an example. I
may give you a choice of questions and ask you to do one of them.
